Start with the failure pattern and available evidence
A burner lockout, valve mismatch, temperature issue, communication fault, or unsuccessful test can have controls, instrumentation, electrical, utility, mechanical, process, or operating causes. The useful first step is to correlate timestamps, alarms, sequence states, commands, feedback, recent changes, and field condition.
Remote or onsite work depends on scope, schedule, authorization, safety requirements, software access, and site access. VIR Automation does not bypass trips, force outputs, defeat safety functions, or promise a compliance or performance result.
Controls-Side Review Areas
PLC Faults and Communications
Controller and module status, diagnostics, network faults, program baseline, firmware context, and recent change history.
Valve and Sequence Behavior
Command versus feedback, transition timers, sequence state, actuator status, and mismatch alarms for poppet, rotary, and damper systems.
Burner-Interface Visibility
Flame-safeguard or BMS status, request, ready, running, lockout, alarm code, reset, and modulation signals within the approved interface scope.
Review After Testing or Permit Activity
Time-correlated review of alarms, trends, sequence states, commands, and feedback to determine whether controls or instrumentation warrant further investigation.
Analog Signals and PID Response
Scaling, units, input quality, setpoint, output, command, feedback, and trend behavior. Field calibration and combustion work remain with qualified parties.
Alarm and HMI Clarity
Initiating-condition visibility, alarm text, timestamps, sequence context, manual-mode indication, and operator diagnostic screens.
How the Review Proceeds
Collect the Baseline
Current native PLC/HMI projects, logic report, drawings, sequence, alarm history, trends, firmware/software versions, and known changes.
Correlate the Event
Match timestamps, sequence state, alarm order, commands, feedback, process response, maintenance work, and test timing.
Define the Responsible Path
Identify a controls correction, required field verification, or referral to instrumentation, electrical, mechanical, process, OEM, environmental, or licensed authority.
Implement and Document
When authorized, preserve the baseline, develop the bounded correction, test it, record the result, and update the handoff documents.
